UMass Boston Soccer Players Punished For 'Completely Unacceptable' Plays

BOSTON (CBS) – Multiple UMass Boston men's soccer players were punished for their questionable actions during a recent playoff game.

On Sunday, UMass Boston defeated Haverford College of Pennsylvania in penalty kicks during the second round of the Division III NCAA tournament.

Two players, Joshua Khang and Ocane Williamson, received red cards during the game and were ejected, according to a box score from the game.

Video from the game was posted on YouTube and viewed more than 73,000 times. The video shows several questionable plays made by UMass Boston players.

In one of the clips, Khang can be seen picking up the ball following a whistle and drop-kicking it. The ball bounces off a Haverford player's head.

Khang received a yellow card in the first half, then a red card in the second frame.

Another clip appears to show a UMass Boston player head-butting an opponent away from the ball. It is not clear which player is shown in that portion of the video.

Williamson was given a red card in the second half of the game after he grabbed a Haverford player and wrestled him to the ground after a foul was called.

The referee approaches Williamson to present him with the card, which results in an ejection. At that point, Williamson is seen on video appearing to head-butt the referee.

UMass Boston Director of Communications DeWayne Lehman said the school has taken disciplinary actions against the players involved and met with the entire team about the incidents.

"At the University of Massachusetts Boston, we expect all of our students to model behavior that exemplifies our values as a university. Student-athletes in particular are held to the highest standards of sportsmanship," said Lehman, who called the actions "completely unacceptable."

"We do not condone these actions. We have so many hardworking, dedicated student-athletes in our program, and it's unfortunate that the actions of a few may overshadow the accomplishments of so many."

Several UMass Boston supporters claimed in the comments section of the YouTube video that Harverford fans used racist chants during the game.

Harverford College spokesman Chris Mills denied those allegations in a statement.

The video speaks for itself. As for allegations of offensive behavior by Haverford fans, nothing we saw or heard on game day -- or have seen or heard in the aftermath -- supports those claims, which are profoundly inconsistent with Haverford values of trust, concern, respect and dedication to a more just and peaceful world.

The UMass Boston men's soccer program made headlines in 2015 as well.

Three players were disciplined after getting into a vulgar social media argument about concussions with former New England Revolution player Taylor Twellman.

Following its penalty kicks victory over Haverford last weekend, UMass Boston next plays on Saturday against Tufts University in the third round.
