Boomer Between The Games: Week 10 Preview With Chris Simms

By DJ Sixsmith

In Week 9 of the NFL season, the Oakland Raiders became a first place team in the AFC West and NFL officiating was once again under fire. This season, NFL fans will be able to hear even more about their favorite teams in a brand new digital show called Boomer Between the Games. Hosted by NFL on CBS analyst and WFAN radio host Boomer Esiason, the former NFL quarterback gives his thoughts on the week that was in the National Football League and chats with an all-star roster of guests about the upcoming week of games.

This week on Boomer Between the Games, former NFL quarterback Chris Simms joined the program. Simms is a lead NFL analyst for Bleacher Report and a game analyst for CBS Sports Network. Chris is the son of Super Bowl winning quarterback Phil Simms and was a  third round draft pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2003. Simms threw 12 touchdown passes in his NFL career and spent a year as an assistant coach with the New England Patriots.

This week's episode started off with a conversation about the Baltimore's hard fought win over Pittsburgh. Simms was extremely impressed with the way former Steelers WR Mike Wallace played in Week 9. Wallace went over 100 yards and scored a touchdown against his former team. Chris believes Wallace is one of the biggest surprises of the NFL season. The former Buccaneers quarterback has major concerns about the Pittsburgh offense and defense. Boomer echoed that sentiment by saying the Steelers are trending downward. In fact, Esiason believes Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin is on the hot seat if Pittsburgh doesn't make the postseason.

Additionally, the two former NFL quarterbacks discussed the issues with the Philadelphia Eagles and Carson Wentz. Boomer was quick to explain why Wentz got out to such a poor start against the New York Giants. Boomer was very disappointed with the way the Eagles handled their fourth quarter offense. Simms took the conversation to the next level by calling out Eagles head coach Doug Pederson. Chris was extremely critical of Pederson's play calling on 4th down and blasted Pederson for being too aggressive and reckless with his decisions. With all that being said, both Simms and Esiason agreed Wentz showed resilience in this game and still gave his squad an opportunity to win after everything that happened.

The biggest storyline heading into Week 10 is the matchup between the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots. While Seattle survived against Buffalo in Week 9, Simms is not high on Seattle's offense. The Bleacher Report analyst highlighted that Pete Carroll's team has had issues running the ball and protecting Russell Wilson. Chris believes this year's Seattle team is worse than the team that lost to New England in the Super Bowl. Conversely, he feels this year's Patriots team is better than the squad that beat Seattle in the Super Bowl. Meanwhile, Boomer has a gut feeling Rob Gronkowski and Martellus Bennett will have huge games against a banged up Seattle defense. Both Michael Bennett and Cam Chancellor are huge questions marks heading into Week 10. Boomer and Chris also previewed Washington's matchup against the struggling Minnesota Vikings and Pittsburgh's major test against the Dallas Cowboys.

Finally, Boomer and Bill grabbed a fan question from Twitter. The former NFL MVP and former NFL quarterback discussed if the Oakland Raiders have a better chance of going further this season than the Arizona Cardinals. Simms started off the conversation by calling Raiders quarterback Derek Carr his MVP of the 2016 NFL season. Simms is all about Oakland's young core and the former signal caller thinks Oakland will go much further than Arizona. Meanwhile, Boomer emphasized the importance of Aldon Smith's return and noted that Carr has been one of the best closers in football. However, Boomer doesn't see Oakland winning a Super Bowl this year because of Tom Brady and the New England Patriots.

Boomer Between the Games will be available every week here on CBS Local Sports. Throughout the entire season, Boomer will be joined by guests like former Pro Bowl wide receiver Mike Quick and 2x Super Bowl champ Phil Simms. Former NFL player Brian Jones will stop by next week to look back at Week 10 and look ahead to the great games in Week 11. Join the conversation with Boomer each week by using #BoomerBTG and one of your tweets could be included in next week's show.
