Diamondbacks Reportedly Set To Hire Torey Lovullo As Their Next Manager
BOSTON (CBS) -- John Farrell will be back with the Red Sox in 2017, but his second-in-command will not.
The Arizona Diamondbacks are reportedly set to hire Torey Lovullo to be their new manager, according to John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports 98.7FM in Phoenix. A press conference to introduce their new skipper is scheduled for Monday.
This will be the first Major League managerial position for the 51-year-old Lovullo, who put together a lengthy resume in the minors before joining Farrell on the Toronto Blue Jays staff in 2010. When Farrell left Toronto to take the managerial job in Boston ahead of the 2013 season, he hired Lovullo as his bench coach. Farrell, and Lovullo, helped guide the Red Sox to a World Series victory in their first season on the bench.
Lovullo had a successful stint as interim manager in Boston in 2015 when Farrell was diagnosed with cancer, guiding them to a 28-20 record to close the season. He was rumored as a candidate for a few open manager positions that offseason, but he opted to rejoin the Boston bench when a healthy Farrell returned in 2016. The Red Sox awarded him with a two-year contract for his loyalty.
But the Diamondbacks chose to clean house following a 69-93 finish to the 2016 season, firing both GM Dave Stewart and Chip Hale after the disappointing campaign. Former Boston GM Mike Hazen took over for Stewart, and it didn't take him very long to bring Lovullo out west to man the Arizona bench.
