Student Sues Northeastern University Saying School Didn't Protect Her After Sex Assault

BOSTON (CBS) - A student is suing Northeastern University, claiming the school didn't do enough to protect her after a sexual assault.

Fourth-year student Morgan Helfman says she was raped as a freshman and that the school mishandled her case. Helfman says in 2013, she was drinking at a Halloween party when a male student offered to bring her home.

She says instead he brought her to his room and raped her. Two days later, Helfman reported the case to school officials.

The Northeastern Conduct Board found the male student did not violate the school's conduct code and they rejected Helfman's demands to move the man out of her dorm.

"The expectation when you drink is that you'll get hungover the next day and maybe wake up with a groggy head, you don't expect to be sexually assaulted," Helfman said. "And if that does happen, the school will take care of it."

Helfman says she decided to stay at Northeastern to work on issues of campus violence. And she still sees her alleged attacker on campus.

Northeastern released a statement to WBZ saying they have not yet seen the lawsuit but that the safety of students is its top priority.
