Somerset Man Was High When He Crashed With Daughter In Car, Police Say

SOMERSET (CBS) -- A man who crashed into a tractor trailer Friday night with his 6-year-old daughter in the car admitted to being high on drugs at the time of the crash, police say.

Matthew Leonardo, 30, of Somerset, crashed his car, wedging it partially under a tractor trailer after driving through a red light on Lees River Avenue into the intersection with Rte. 6 according to police. Leonardo allegedly told police he had taken heroin and cocaine prior to the crash.

Police charged Leonardo with operating a motor vehicle under the influence of drugs, reckless endangerment of a child causing bodily injury and driving through a red light.

Both Leonardo and his daughter were taken to the hospital after the accident. Police say Leonardo was taken to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence with facial injuries and his daughter was taken to Hasbro Children's Hospital in Providence for observation.

Police also said they found unidentified drug paraphernalia in Leonardo's car.

Because of his injuries, it's unclear when Leonardo will be arraigned, police said.
