Keller @ Large: Women And The Election

BOSTON (CBS) -- In this election, women have been front and center--female candidates, female voters, and of course, issues of special importance to women.

WBZ political analyst Jon Keller sat down with Sarah McCarthy Welsh, the Executive Director of the Massachusetts Women's Political Caucus, to talk about women and the 2016 election.

Jon asked Welsh about how female political leadership is different. She said collaboration was the distinguishing factor.

"The women that I know and that I'm working with, and women who are currently elected officials, collaborate," Welsh said. "They think differently, they collaborate, and they do tend to focus more on issues that affect women, for example, pay equity, family leave, different things like that."

Welsh disagreed when Keller suggested Hillary Clinton presented a challenge to that mold.

"When you think about one of the focuses of her entire career has been families and children, children in particular," Welsh said. "She's been consistent with that since she was the First Lady of Arkansas.

Keller and Welsh also talked about why Massachusetts ranks so low in terms of the percentage of public offices held by women, and the lasting impact of the Donald Trump candidacy on women in politics.
