No GM Needed: Red Sox Name Eddie Romero Jr. Assistant General Manager

BOSTON (CBS) -- The Red Sox are not replacing Mike Hazen at GM, instead going with a pair of Assistant General Managers who will work under President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski.

Brian O'Halloran already made up half of that equation, and on Tuesday, the Red Sox announced that long-time team employee Eddie Romero has also been elevated to Senior Vice President/Assistant General Manager.

Romero and O'Halloran will both directly report to Dombrowski and assist in all aspects of baseball operations going forward.

"The Red Sox are very pleased to announce Eddie's promotion to Assistant General Manager," Dombrowski said in a statement released by the team. "This is a very talented individual who we think can make a real impact for us with his background in player evaluation and his knowledge of our minor league system. A native Spanish speaker, his ability to communicate with both players and staff is significant, especially in today's game. We look forward to having Eddie onboard to assist our efforts to improve our ball club."

The 37-year-old Romero is now in his 11th season with the organization, and was elevated to the position of Vice President, International Scouting at the start of the 2016 season. While in that role he oversaw the club's amateur scouting in Latin America, in addition to the Pacific Rim and Europe, while also assisting with the team's domestic amateur scouting operation. Romero played a significant role in the signings of Red Sox international prospects such as Yoan Moncada (Cuba), Rafael Devers (Dominican Republic), Luis Alexander Basabe (Venezuela), and Roniel Raudes (Nicaragua) since becoming part of the organization in 2006.

Romero began his career in Boston as an assistant in International and Professional Scouting, and served as the team's Director of International Scouting from 2012-15 The son of former Red Sox infielder Ed Romero Sr., Romero was a prosecutor for the State Attorney's office for the Fourth Judicial District in Jacksonville, Florida before beginning his career in baseball.

Hazen, who served as Boston's GM following Ben Cherington's departure in August 2015, left the Red Sox earlier this offseason to run the Arizona Diamondbacks.
