Braintree Police Praised For Slew Of Overdose Saves In 48 Hours

BRAINTREE (CBS) -- When a bystander who witnessed a Braintree police officer revive an apparent overdose victim tried to thank the officer, the response was unremarkable.

"I thanked him in person and, to be honest, he seemed confused... shrugged it off like it was all in a routine day," the witness posted on social media. "Yes, this is probably too routine for our police force and no, they do not get thanked enough."

First responders in Braintree saved at least four people from drug overdoses within the last 48 hours, the city's police department tweeted Friday. Braintree Police, firefighters, and Brewster Ambulance Services responded to cases. A dozen doses of the overdose reversal drug Narcan were used on all four.

Braintree police say they've responded to 11 overdose calls in the last week, a testament to the spiraling opioid epidemic.

The unidentified bystander, however, says its the first save he or she has witnessed. The experience was described as "quick" and "intense."

"Before leaving the parking lot, the officer made sure the man's car window was up and the vehicle was locked," the witness wrote.

The witness credits the save to the officer and another bystander who called 911.

"Together, they gave this man another chance at life," the witness wrote.
