Man Dead, Wife Seriously Injured After Apparent Home Invasion In Orange

ORANGE (CBS) – An elderly man is dead and his wife suffered serious injuries in an apparent home invasion Wednesday night in Orange. Police are still searching for a suspect.

The Franklin County District Attorney's office and Massachusetts State Police responded to a home on East River Street after the crime was discovered on Thursday morning.

The woman was rushed to an area hospital by medical helicopter.

A neighbor told WBZ-TV's Louisa Moller that officers did not comment specifically on what happened, other than telling her it was serious.

"One cop came over and asked me a couple questions and was real nice to me," the neighbor said. "And, all he said was, 'Ma'am, something bad, something horrible happened that's it.'"

Denise Levasseur, who lives next door, says she heard nothing Wednesday night. She described the couple as friendly and outgoing. The husband, she says, still went to work in his 90s.

"They were a very nice couple, you know very nice," Levasseur said. "They got along really good. Everybody really liked them and you know, it saddens me to think that something happened to them."

Schools in town were asked to shelter in place as a precaution. Police said no students were ever in danger.
