Keller @ Large: Mass. AG Maura Healey Talks Gun Regulations

BOSTON (CBS) -- It's part of her job, but the state's top law officer is being sued on several fronts over new gun regulations she imposed this summer.

WBZ political analyst Jon Keller sat down with Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey to discuss those regulations--and she said she has no second thoughts about setting them.

"I am really pleased to see that the notice we sent out, the notice saying we're going to enforce the existing law, is working," Healey said. "Sales of those assault weapons have virtually stopped in this state. That's a good thing."

She reminded viewers that the state's ban on assault weapons has been in place since 1998.

"For years, the gun lobby would say, 'We don't need new regulations, we don't need new laws, just enforce the laws that are on the books.' That's exactly what I did in enforcing the 1998 ban," she said.

She said that enforcing the part of the ban that deals with so-called copycat weapons that functioned the same as the banned weapons was a matter of public health and would save lives--though her critics called her move political grandstanding.

"In this country, the majority of Americans get this," Healey said. "This is about common-sense reforms and steps, and that includes enforcing existing laws."

Keller and Healey also discussed early voting, as well as the November election and beyond.
