4-Alarm Fire Rips Through Dartmouth College Dorm

HANOVER, N.H. (CBS) – No one was injured as a fire ripped through a dorm hall at New Hampshire's Dartmouth College.

Flames could be seen shooting through the roof of Morton Hall early Saturday morning.

Firefighters battled flames for several hours until the fire was finally knocked down around 5 a.m.

No one was injured but about 70 students are displaced.

"This was an extremely difficult and complicated fire to fight due to the height of the building, and the void space construction of the heavy gauge copper roofing material," the Hanover Fire Department said. "The design of the building included approximately 25' vaulted ceilings that prevented the firefighters from exposing the fire that was burning in the roof structure from the interior.  A total of four alarms were required to bring this stubborn fire under control."

Temporary housing was made available for students who were displaced by the fire.

Due to "extensive" smoke and water damage, the dormitory is uninhabitable.

The State Fire Marshal's office and Hanover Police are investigating the fire.

Two firefighters suffered minor injuries but were able to continue battling the flames.
