Probe Into Gloucester PD And Its Chief Deepens

GLOUCESTER (AP) — An outside firm is auditing Gloucester's police department after its nationally recognized police chief was placed on administrative leave.

Mayor Sefatia Romeo Theken announced Friday that Municipal Resources Inc., of Meredith, New Hampshire, will conduct an audit of the department.

Theken has already hired two outside firms to conduct audits into "the professional conduct" of Police Chief Leonard Campanello and another officer.

The two were placed on administrative leave by the mayor earlier this month. The administration says there's no timeline for the investigations.

Campanello gained national prominence when he launched in June 2015 the city's ANGEL program providing heroin addiction services. The program has been replicated in dozens of police departments across the country.

Campanello was honored by the White House earlier this year. His lawyer didn't immediately comment Friday.
