Worcester Man Charged With Attempted Murder Of 3-Year-Old Nephew

WORCESTER (CBS) – A criminal investigation is underway after a young child was injured in a Worcester apartment Thursday afternoon.

Worcester Police received a call from a man at the Lincoln Village apartments saying he had killed his nephew.

The little boy was found alive and taken to the hospital, where he is in stable condition. Police say the boy had trauma to the face and neck area.

Police took the man, 21-year-old Taj McDonald, into custody. McDonald allegedly told police he was in charge of watching the boy for the day while the boy's father was at work. According to police, McDonald assaulted the boy several times.

McDonald is facing multiple charges including Attempted Murder, Assault and Battery, and Strangulation.

Neighbors are shocked by the news.

"It just made me scared, it made me want to keep my kids in the house because I figure if you could do this to your own family, then you could pretty much do it to anybody," neighbor Heather Chesna said. "I was really scared for my own kids, for somebody else's kids, and I really hope that that little boy is going to be OK."

A spokesperson for the Department of Children and Families says the agency has also begun its own investigation.

McDonald is due in court on Friday.
