Autumn Has Arrived, But Still Waiting For Significant Rain

BOSTON (CBS) - Welcome to Autumn!

There's something so wonderful about the Fall season - sunny days, cool nights, crisp air, apples, pumpkins, football, leaf peeping, fairs, boots, sweaters… and so much more.  I love it all.

Mother Nature is a bit confused today though as the feel of summer just doesn't want to seem to let go.  Our highs will once again rise into the 80's this afternoon with plenty of sun and low humidity. We'll enjoy one more warm day Friday before noticeably cooler air arrives to New England.

That cool air gets ushered in by a cold front, which will push through the region from north to south.  Ahead of it, we'll come into the 80s by early afternoon Friday before the wind shifts out of the north and the cooler air starts to drain into southern New England.

The front will also be accompanied by a few showers and maybe even an isolated thunderstorm (non-severe).  The risk of rain isn't worth cancelling outdoor plans, but it is worth carrying the umbrella and having the CBS Boston Weather App on hand to check live radar.

Despite some recent rain, unfortunately our areas of severe and extreme drought remain unchanged this week.  And it looks like another prolonged stretch of below normal precipitation will continue, with little in the way of significant rain.
