Gloucester Police Chief Placed On Paid Leave

GLOUCESTER (CBS) – Gloucester Police Chief Leonard Campanello has been placed on paid administrative leave.

Chief Campanello was placed on leave Tuesday by Gloucester Mayor Sefatia Romeo Theken pending the outcome of an internal investigation.

The mayor would not comment on the investigation and no other details were released.

Campanello told the Gloucester Times he does not know what the investigation is about and he is unconcerned about it.

Campanello has made national headlines for his program which offers rehab for addicts instead of arrest. Last year, Campanello announced his department would not arrest heroin addicts if they bring their drugs to the police station and request help.

In April, he was honored at the White House as a "Champion of Change."

Campanello has led the Gloucester Police since 2012.
