3 People Struck By Car Near Downtown Crossing

BOSTON (CBS) -- Three people were hit by a car at the intersection of Washington and School Streets in Downtown Boston Thursday afternoon.

Witnesses say a woman was driving the Mercedes Benz sedan that struck a woman, boy and a third person and tried to drive away.

"A bunch of people just got around in front of the car, like 200 people, they came from everywhere and just surrounded the car and wouldn't let her drive," the witness said.

The witness also said the woman ran into a nearby bagel shop where she was arrested while people lifted the car to help the victims. Cell phone video captured Good Samaritans coming to the aid of individuals trapped under the car.

"Really sad," said one woman who watched rescue efforts. "A young kid on the street with what appeared to be his mom. They both looked severely injured or pretty bruised. And people were frantic."

A surveillance camera sits on a utility pole right above the accident scene. A tour trolley driver says he saw the whole thing.

"The car in front of us struck a pedestrian, she tried to take off, a mob just came out of nowhere surrounded the car wouldn't let her leave, she had the people underneath the car," he said.

He says the crowd may have saved a life by lifting the car. Police say the injuries are not life threatening. No word yet on possible charges against the driver.
