Red Sox Place Steven Wright On DL, Hanley Ramirez On Bereavement List

BOSTON (CBS) -- Red Sox manager John Farrell announced a pair of roster moves after the team's 16-2 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks at Fenway Park on Sunday, placing knuckleballer Steven Wright on the 15-day disabled list and first baseman Hanley Ramirez on the bereavement list.

Wright's move to the DL is retroactive to Monday, August 8. Clay Buchholz will take his spot in the rotation for another start on Thursday in Detroit. He is confident that he could be re-activated in time for a start on August 23 against the Tampa Bay Rays.

"The stuff that I've been doing with the trainers from the first time when I came in on Tuesday until now, it's been significant gains. It's just not where we need it to be," Wright told reporters Sunday. "Now that we can take a couple of extra days to really get after it, I'm sure I'll be fine."

Ramirez will be on the bereavement list for the next three days and is expected to re-join the Red Sox in Detroit on Thursday.

Elsewhere on the roster, lefty Roenis Elias was optioned back to Triple-A Pawtucket after the game Sunday. Corresponding roster moves for Wright and Ramirez have yet to be made as the Red Sox head out on an 11-game road trip, starting with one game in Cleveland to make up for a rainout from the first series of the season in April, a brief two-game set in Baltimore against the Orioles, four games in Detroit, and four more in Tampa.
