BOSTON (CBS) — A 9-year-old boy reported missing from Dorchester was found safe and his father is in police custody.
Maria Alves’ grandson Kelvin Martins was missing all morning on Friday. Boston Police didn’t find him until early afternoon.
They say his father took him overnight after a shooting at an apartment building on Blue Hill Avenue. The boy’s father is Juan Ayala-Powell. Police began looking for him and his green Ford Explorer. They found the SUV and the boy at a home on Fernboro Street.
But his father wasn’t there.
“Yes it’s crazy, it’s unbelievable,” said Shantae, the suspect’s ex-girlfriend.
Shantae says she’s known the boy since he was a baby and had no idea that Juan may have been involved in a shooting or that police were searching for Kelvin.
She says Powell dropped off the boy at her apartment without an explanation.
“It’s not his nature,” Shantae said. “He doesn’t go around shooting people. No I have never seen him with a firearm. None of that.”
Kelvin’s grandmother painted a similar picture of his dad.
“Kelvin father is a good father, and you know was a good father,” Alves said. “Two days ago was his birthday. He comes in with the balloons, with the cake.”
Now back home safe, Kelvin looks forward to spending time with his grandmother and playing video games.
The man who was shot on Blue Hill Avenue is expected to survive.
