Pregnant Woman, Family Survive Rollover Crash

CONCORD, NH (CBS) - A newborn and her mother are doing well after a terrible car crash that threatened both of their lives. It happened in Dunbarton, NH. Quick thinking by the woman's husband saved them both.

"We were probably five minutes from the house, and we got hit," says Kaitlin Fournier who's in bed at Concord Hospital. Both cars in the accident were totaled. Police say Kaitlin and Brad Fournier's SUV was smashed when another driver ran a stop sign.

Their five year old daughter was also in the car. "We skidded and then just rolled a minimum of three to four times. It happened very quickly and the impact was loud and forceful," Kaitlin says.

Kaitlin who was 37 weeks pregnant, suffered life threatening injuries when her calf was severed. "As soon as the truck stopped I saw my leg and that freaked me out and then I just started screaming, I'm pregnant," she remembers.

Despite the trauma of the crash, Brad thought fast, pulling off his belt and telling a good Samaritan at the scene to make a tourniquet. "I knew I didn't have much time on either end. I knew I needed an ambulance," Brad says.

Rushed to Concord Hospital, Kaitlin took a bad turn when she got to the emergency room. "I started to bleed really, really badly and her heart rate plummeted and they had to take her out as soon as possible," Kaitlin says.

An emergency C-section brought Olivia into the world. Then the doctors operated on Kaitlin's leg. "I never thought that would happen. I'm just glad she's OK, they're OK. I'm here and it could have been much worse," she says.

"It's pretty rare you get a good ending. I'm really happy for that," says Brad.

Olivia was born just two weeks early. She weighed in at six pounds, five ounces and 19 1/4 inches.
