Elderly Hingham Woman Sexually Assaulted During 'Random' Attack

HINGHAM (CBS) – Police are searching for a man accused of breaking into an elderly Hingham woman's home and sexually assaulting her.

Hingham Police say the attack, which was described as random, took place Thursday around 9 p.m.

"We don't want people to panic, just be vigilant," says Hingham Police Sgt. Steve Dearth.

The suspect broke into the North Hingham home by forcing his way through a ground floor window.

Police say the man ran away after sexually assaulting the woman. The woman, whose name and exact neighborhood were not released, called 911 after the suspect left.

The suspect is described as a white man who is about 65 years old. He has gray thinning hair, brown eyes, and a thin build.

In Hingham, where crime is low anyway, residents were stunned to hear of such a violent crime.

"It's frightening, it's sick, and it's cause for concern for me, certainly," said one woman.

The woman said she does not know the man who attacked her. She was briefly hospitalized, but when released, she decided not to return home.

"This is troublesome. This is somebody that needs to be off the street," said Sgt. Dearth. "People need to feel safe in their own homes."

Police are asking North Hingham residents to let them know if they have seen anything suspicious.
