Koji Uehara Placed On Disabled List With Strained Pectoral

BOSTON (CBS) -- The Red Sox are down another reliever -- and closer.

Boston placed Koji Uehara on the 15-day disabled list on Wednesday with a right pectoral strain, an injury he suffered in Tuesday night's 4-0 win over the San Francisco Giants.

Uehara struck out the Giants' Brandon Belt then threw a pitch to Buster Posey before signaling for trainers to come out of the dugout to check on him. He said after the game that he felt something wrong even before that, according to Quinn Roberts of MLB.com.

Uehara had converted five straight save opportunities filling in for injured closer Craig Kimbrel, who will be out at least another two-to-five weeks after undergoing minor knee surgery on July 11. With Junichi Tazawa also out until Friday at the earliest, the team may have to turn to recent trade acquisition Brad Ziegler to close games for the foreseeable future.

To fill Uehara's spot on the 25-man roster, right-handed pitcher Noe Ramirez was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket.
