Sports Final: Mazz Hates The Drew Pomeranz Trade

BOSTON (CBS) -- The Boston Red Sox set the trade market last week, sending highly touted pitching prospect Anderson Espinoza to San Diego for lefty Drew Pomeranz.

Pomeranz was one of the best available starters, but 98.5 The Sports Hub's Tony Massarotti is not a fan of Dave Dombrowski giving up the team's top pitching prospect in the deal. He discussed his displeasure of the trade on Sunday night's Sports Final on WBZ-TV.

"I hate the trade. I can't stand the trade. Anderson Espinoza is the best pitching prospect in their system," Mazz told WBZ-TV's Steve Burton. "I'm OK with trading [Espinoza], but if you're going to give up this kind of kid you have to get yourself a legitimate pitcher coming back."

Pomeranz was a first-time All-Star for the Padres this season going 8-7 with a 2.47 ERA, striking out 115 in 102 innings in the first half -- all career highs. While he should help the struggling Boston rotation, Mazz isn't sold on surrendering such a big price tag and wonders just how good the lefty really is.

"He's had one good half season," Mazz said. "I think you can get something better for a prospect like that. Pomeranz is 27, he's an All-Star and he has two years of control left. He's young, he's affordable and he's under your control -- who trades a guy like that?

"I'm not sure how good Drew Pomeranz really is," said Mazz.

Mazz also shares his thoughts on Dombrowski being aggressive on the trade market, Eduardo Rodriguez's first start after being recalled from Triple A and looks ahead to the second half of the season.
