Driver Killed After Police Pursuit Leads To Crash In Amesbury

AMESBURY (CBS) -- One man was killed after a police pursuit of a reportedly stolen car.

The crash happened as police chased the 2003 Honda Civic early Monday morning.

Merrimac Police said one of their officers tried to stop the car on Route 110 around 12:11 after he noticed its license plate light was out, but the car sped away when he turned on his lights.

Police later found the car crashed into a utility pole on Haverhill Road. According to the Essex County District Attorney's office, the driver of the car lost control, and the car rolled over.

The driver, a man from Lawrence, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Another Lawrence man was partially thrown from the vehicle, and was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries.

A third passenger was found after a search by the Amesbury Police K-9 unit. He was taken to an area hospital with injuries that were non-life-threatening.

Merrimac, Amesbury, and Massachusetts State Police, as well as the Essex DA's office, are investigating the crash.

They found that the vehicle's plates had been stolen.

The driver and passengers have not yet been identified.
