'Please Have Respect': Police Scold Pokemon Go Users Playing At Sean Collier Memorial

CAMBRIDGE (CBS) – The MIT police department is asking Pokemon Go players to "please have respect" and put down their phones at the memorial of an officer killed by the Boston Marathon bombers.

The popular app has players exploring the outdoors as they try to "catch 'em all" using their smartphone cameras. But police say it's in poor taste to play the game at the site that honors MIT officer Sean Collier, who was gunned down by the Boston Marathon bombers in the wake of the attacks.

"We do not consider playing "Pokemon Go" to be appropriate decorum on Collier Memorial. We ask all visitors to refrain from such activity," police posted on social media. "This is NOT a gym, it is a memorial."

This is not the first time that Pokemon Go users have been discouraged from playing on hallowed grounds.

Both the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., and the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum have told visitors to not play Pokemon Go.

Arlington National Cemetery has also released its own Pokemon Go policy.

Authorities have also been warning Pokemon trainers that they may be targets for armed robbery, and to avoid catching Pokemon while driving.
