BOSTON (CBS) – While many of us use artificial sweeteners to cut back on sugar a new study suggests that doing so could actually cause us to take in more calories.

Fruit flies were given a diet with high levels of sucralose for more than five days. Then they were given a diet naturally sweetened. They ended up eating more calories, begging the question: Did the artificial sweetener trick the brain into craving more sugar calories?

Keep in mind that these were fruit flies. And obesity experts say artificial sweeteners can be very helpful in helping people lose and maintain their weight. Just don’t overdo it.
