Marty Walsh Reaches Out To Dallas Mayor After 'Devastating' Shootings

BOSTON (CBS) – Boston Mayor Marty Walsh said he has reached out to the mayor of Dallas in the aftermath of sniper attacks that left five police officers dead.

Walsh said he called Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings, a Boston College graduate, to offer his city's support.

"We are there for Dallas if they need us for anything. We are ready," Walsh told WBZ NewsRadio 1030.

In total, 12 people were shot near the end of a peaceful Black Lives Matter rally Thursday night in Dallas. Five of the officers died.

"We have no place in our country for an attack like this on our law enforcement," said Walsh. "This type of action against our police, we're sure yet what it is, it's just not right. It's devastating."

Police say one of the suspects told police negotiators during a standoff that he was angry about the killing of black people, and he wanted to kill white police officers.

Hostage negotiators killed the suspect after he indicated he had explosive devices, police said.

Walsh said the Dallas incident shows how difficult it is to be a police officer.

"Today's a tough day to be a police officer. I think today you're going to look over your back," said Walsh. "I would just ask people if you see a police officer, shake their hand because it's a difficult job. I'm certainly going to talk to as many officers as I can and let them know I support them."
