Cool, Rainy At Times This Weekend

BOSTON (CBS) - We have been riding quite a weather wave the last few weekends.  Now we are playing some catch up.

An upper level low pressure system moves through New England Sunday.  That means repeated rain chances starting Friday night, ending Sunday night with some potentially leftover showers popping Monday.

Friday Night:

Overcast, cool, damp & some showers.  Though not anticipating soaking, widespread rain overnight.  Lows will be around 60.  Waking up to some mist and fog Saturday morning.

Saturday:

Similar to what we experienced Friday. Clouds hang around most of the day. But we increase our rain chance a bit.  A few showers may develop, there is also an isolated storm chance.  Plenty of dry opportunities throughout the day to enjoy the city or a walk on the beach.  But you may want to cover up a bit more…temps stay in the 60s with an onshore flow. Lower 70s (at best) inland.

Sunday:

Saturday night, numerous showers and storms march through New England.  Soaking rain will give our lawns and flowers a good drink. Wet roads, wet grass, and lingering showers will welcome you into Sunday morning.  Late afternoon we may see a break from the soaking rain.  Additional spotty showers and perhaps a storm will move through Sunday night.  High temps on Sunday still cool, in the low 70s.

Next week:

As that upper level low moves out of the northeast, there could be some instability along  a trough.  This means that most of the day Monday will be dry & sunny. But an isolated pop up shower can't be totally ruled out.  Temps in the upper 70s & lower 80s.

A return to summer after that, and another dry stretch mid-week.  Humidity slowly increasing into next weekend.  Temperatures will be in the upper 80s to lower 90s.

Severe Drought:

Parts of New England are in the "severe drought category".  Our rainfall deficit has been tallying up quickly since March.  Boston is 4.4" under normal for rainfall since all the way back to January 1. Worcester is 6.5" below normal (also since Jan. 1).  Hopefully we get a soaking rain this weekend.  Rainfall potential through Sunday night shows  around 0.5" of rainfall.  We will take it!  Though, we need several good soakers to get us out of the developing drought (just not all at once).
