Final Preparations Underway For Fourth Of July Celebration In Boston

BOSTON (CBS) -- Nearly a half of a million spectators are expected to fill the esplanade and surrounding areas on Monday.

"Its going to be exciting, probably a very good performance. I would love to see it," expressed one onlooker.

Preps date back to the 1970s. Four decades later and the July 4th Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular on the Esplanade is still going strong.

"It's a tradition here and we're glad to be part of it that's for sure," said Stage Manager Roscoe Smith.

Spectators were down at the Esplanade taking pictures and scoping out potential spots ahead of the July 4th concert and fireworks show.

Mary Watson and her daughter Megan Watson traveled more than two thousand miles from San Antonio, Texas to see the Boston Pops perform live in person.

"I've always wanted to come up here and and I've always wanted to do this. We just decided to do a mother-daughter weekend this year."

"We've been watching the Pops on television since we were kids and since the Fourth of July falls on Monday its a great chance to spend a weekend here in the city," said Megan Watson.

"She got all that from me. I've been watching the Boston Pops for as long as I can remember on TV," Mary said as she and her daughter both laughed.

The mother and daughter will be just two of hundreds of thousands in the area waiting to see the show and fireworks on Monday.

"I just can't wait to see the fireworks. I'm just like a kid when it comes to fireworks," said Mary Watson.

All personal items have to be carried in clear bags for easy inspection. Small purses are allowed but will be subject to inspection.
