Bruins Buy Out Veteran Defenseman Dennis Seidenberg
BOSTON (CBS) -- Another veteran from the Boston Bruins' 2011 Stanley Cup team is gone.
TSN's Bob McKenzie tweeted Thursday that Seidenberg, among other players around the league, was placed on "buyout waivers."
Seidenberg was going to cost the Bruins $4 million against the cap for the next two seasons. Buying him out instead saves the team about $2.8 million in 2016-17 and $1.8 million in 2017-18, before costing $1.16 million for the following two seasons, according to GeneralFanager.com's Buyout Calculator.
Seidenberg told The Boston Herald he was "shocked" when Bruins' GM Don Sweeney called him on Thursday to break the news.
"I loved playing there, I loved living in the city. I'm going to miss it," he said.
ESPN's Joe McDonald tweeted that the Bruins have no plans of any other buyouts. The buyout period ends when NHL free agency begins at midnight on July 1.
The Bruins originally acquired Seidenberg in a trade in 2010. As Zdeno Chara's longtime partner on the blue line, Seidenberg was a key cog in the Bruins' dominating defensive corps that helped them win a Stanley Cup in 2011 and return to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2013.
Seidenberg told the Boston Herald back in May that he would be "done playing hockey" if he were bought out.
