Boston Harbor Islands Provides 'Glorified Tent' For Campers

BOSTON (CBS) – Rustic camping on a Boston Harbor Island has become a popular activity during the summer.

Now, you can camp without bringing your own tent. All you'll need is a sleeping bag and a pillow.

One of Peddocks Island highest points is now home to six yurts, a circular wood-framed structure, described as a "glorified tent" according to Jessica Renehan, Visitor Services Supervisor with the Massachusetts Department of Consecration and Recreation.

"It's just a really a spectacular place to stay overnight," said Renehan.

There are currently six yurts available to rent during the summer season with plans on building six more of the canvas sided cabins on the other side of the island.

According to Renehan, each yurt is equipped with table, benches, and a fan powered by electricity -- for small appliances.

"It's the best way to go camping without really feeling like you are roughing it," she said.

A single yurt can accommodate up to 6 campers on 2 bunk beds.

With scenic hiking trails and military ruins, Peddocks Island is the second largest Boston Harbor Island.

Located about 8-miles from the Boston's shores, it's a 30-minute boat ride from downtown.

According to Mass DCR and the National Parks Service, the island is still home to active cottages that serve as private residences.

Since the mid-1600s it has been home to American Indians, militiamen, prisoners of war, farmers, and summer vacationers. It is also the previous home to Fort Andrews from early 1900s through World War II as part of the harbor's defense.

There are a handful of military structures remaining on the island including chapel recently renovated with the help of the Carpenters Union.
