Phantom Gourmet: 5 South Main In Cohasset

COHASSET - If you're looking for a sweet way to start your day, or an overloaded lobster roll for lunch, or if you just want a good old grilled cheese sandwich at any hour, then the only address you need to know is 5 South Main. Located in Cohasset, 5 South Main is a casual breakfast and lunch spot where they treat customers like family.

"Hopefully, they kind of feel like they've walked into our house, and it's just warm and comfortable," said owner Jenn Meckler. "Everybody should feel like family when they're here."

That comfortable vibe pairs nicely with some mouthwatering, fresh cooked comfort food.

"5 South Main is comfort food kicked up a notch. We do breakfast and lunch. We kind of do everything from my childhood that made me happy, and hopefully makes other people happy," Jenn said.

And nothing makes her happier, than grilled cheese.

"Grilled cheese to me just makes the world a happier place. If you are having a bad day, grilled cheese fixes it. If you're having a great day, grilled cheese is just a celebration."

So customers can customize their own, or order the lobster-stuffed version called The Gooey Louie, named after 5 South Main's mascot, Louie the Lobster.

"He's a great mascot and stands outside and kind of waves at everybody. Little kids come by and take their picture with him. Teenagers come by and try and steal him," Jenn said.

But when you get a load of The Gooey Louie sandwich, most will want to greet him, then eat him! Served on sourdough and stuffed with lobster salad and cheddar, this is one grilled cheese you've got to try.

"You kind of get the cheese that melts over the lobster and the crunch of the bread," Jenn described.

Louie has also made his way into an omelet, and onto a giant lobster roll.

"The Lobster Roll is almost a half of a pound," Jenn said. "It's a giant lobster roll. We use a really nice, seven inch long baguette bread. It's big enough to share if you want to, but it's small enough to order yourself."

Since breakfast is the most important meal of the day, Jenn and her team take their start of the day specialties seriously. So when they make pancakes, they make them big and puffy. And when they top them, it's decadent, with Belgian chocolate and fresh raspberries.

When it comes to French Toast, 5 South Main also keeps it sweet, with creations like the Southern Belle, topped with caramelized peaches, pecans and whipped cream.

"You get the nuttiness of those pecans and the great summer flavor of the peaches. Then you add this caramelized goo to it," Jenn described. "You don't need maple syrup. There's no need."

Maple syrup is unnecessary on the Cinnamon Roll French Toast as well, which takes a sinful cinnamon roll and makes it even more indulgent.

"We cut it in half, and we dip it in the egg cream and vanilla batter. Then we grill it til it's all warm and steamy. Then we do a take on a cinnamon swirl glaze, and put that on top, so it gets drizzled on. It kind of melts as it goes on."

Whether you're looking for a sandwich at breakfast or lunch, with Spuckies this big, 5 South Main has you more than covered.

"We have portion control problems," Jenn admitted. "As far as I'm concerned, you should come with the biggest appetite, and still leave with enough for lunch."

There's a towering egg BLT served on multigrain and a massive club sandwich packed with hand carved turkey. The Wilbur is a sandwich that you have you going hog wild.

"A Wilbur Sandwich is a toasted English muffin with a honey cured ham, some fried eggs on the top. Then we slather the whole baby in brie," Jenn explained. "Everybody here loves it."

When it comes time for dessert, take a quick walk across the street where you find Jenn's bakery, called Baked.

"We have cupcakes here. We have 14 different flavors of homemade cookies. Pretty much you can come here for lunch, and you can have a great dessert, or you can take a trip across the street and have dessert over there, and still kind of continue your experience."

No matter what you eat, it's bound to be a delicious experience, and the results will be written all over your face.

"People smile all the time. If you give them a good meal or a happy breakfast, and they're leaving happy, what's better than that?"
