Boston's New Women's Lacrosse Team Passing The Game On To Young Players

BOSTON (CBS) -- A brand-new women's lacrosse league based in Boston is kicking off its inaugural season--and local players are taking time to share their new opportunity with the next generation.

At a lacrosse clinic in Beverly, where young girls are learning the skills and drills to improve their game, the coaches are players on the Boston Storm, one of the teams in this new league.

"They are here today to do a meet and greet, learn a few things, learn how they got to where they are and dream about being one of them as well," said Bowen Holden, General Manager of the Boston Storm.

Holden is one of four general managers in the new league, the United Women's Lacrosse League.

"It's all about providing opportunities for women by women," said Holden. "They felt lacrosse was the first sport to focus on with the growth we are having with our sport."

The players are all out of college and at least 20 years old. They all go through the draft, and are invited to camp. Each team has 17 players, with three reserves.

There is a league commissioner, and so far there are four teams--Boston Storm, Philadelphia Force, Long Island Sound, and Baltimore Ride.

While players are thrilled for their chance, members of the Boston Storm also know it's about the message it sends to their younger female fans, and the doors they can finally hold open.

"Hopefully, some of them have big dreams to play for one of these professional teams," said Holden.

The league's games are being played all over the East Coast, running through July 16. The Storm's next game near Boston will be July 8 at Lincoln Sudbury High School.
