Yarmouth Community Pitches In After Wounded Marine's Bag Stolen

YARMOUTH (CBS) – Police and community members stepped up to help a vacationing family that had its belongings stolen by a man they befriended at a Yarmouth inflatable park.

Wounded U.S. Marine Robert Watson was visiting Cape Cod with his wife and two children.

The North Carolina family went to Cape Cod Inflatable Park on Wednesday. While at the park, the family became friendly with a man and his young son.

Police say the Watsons left their belongings for just a few minutes to take their children down a slide. When they returned the man was gone, and so was the bag.

The beach bag included the family's wallets, their identifications, cash and bank cards. In addition, Robert Watson's military identification documents, healthcare card and social security card were gone.

A park employee told police they saw the man the family described leaving while carrying a beach bag.

Cape Cod Inflatable Park gave the family $100 for food and gas money to return to their Plymouth hotel.

In addition, on Thursday police invited the family to Yarmouth to receive money from the U.S. Marine Corporal Nicholas G. Xiarhos Memorial Fund at Citizens Bank.

While at the bank, several customers and employees heard the Watson family's story and made additional donations.

Yarmouth Police said they are actively searching for the man who stole the items.
