Keller @ Large: Willing To Give Up More For Better Security?

BOSTON (CBS) - Are you exhausted yet by the political debate in the wake of the Orlando massacre?

That makes two of us. All but the most diehard partisans will acknowledge that it has fallen instantly into totally predictable role playing. Many Democrats and liberals want to make it about guns; many Republicans and conservatives prefer to blame immigration.

There's some truth to be found there. The easy availability of weapons is a problem. So is the loophole-ridden screening process that ushered the radicalized shooters in San Bernardino back into the country.

But the FBI, as they did in the Marathon bombings case, has admitted they missed a chance to forestall the Orlando murderer. If we really want our horror over that atrocity and all the others to lead to constructive improvement in our national security, perhaps we'll have to move past the political pandering and make a series of very hard decisions.

We can look to Israel, a country with one of the highest rates of terror attack and one of the world's most advanced security systems, for the blueprint.

In Israel, profiling is practiced aggressively. Security concerns come before freedom and speed of movement. Surveillance is pervasive. Your bill often includes an extra charge to pay for private security.

Will Americans happily pay more, forfeit freedoms, and sacrifice privacy in exchange for better security? And is there a politician out there with the nerve to ask us?
