Real Estate Broker Accused Of Forging Jury Slip Refuses To Appear In Court

BOSTON (CBS) – A Brighton real estate broker who was previously charged with changing a verdict slip from guilty to not guilty initially refused to enter the courtroom for his arraignment as he faces new charges.

David Scher was previously convicted of stealing a laptop from Suffolk University Law School, where he was a student at the time.

After he was convicted, prosecutors say Scher returned to the Boston Municipal Court building where he was found guily and removed the verdict slip from his file to forge a copy of it.

Scher allegedly altered the copy so it said "not guilty" rather than "guilty."

In March, Scher was charged with tampering with a court document, forgery, perjury, and two counts of uttering a false document.

Prosecutors say Scher then used the forged verdict slip in several matters involving his conviction for stealing the computer.

On Friday, Scher was scheduled to be arraigned for submitting the forged jury slip to the Board of Registration of Real Estate Brokers and Salespersons.

Scher submitted the document under the penalty of perjury as a part of proceedings that were initiated to revoke his broker's license because he did not report his previous larceny conviction.

But when Scher's time for arraignment arrived on Friday, he refused to leave the criminal clerk's office at Suffolk Superior Court.

When he failed to appear, a default warrant was issued and Scher was brought to the courtroom by officers.

The clerk magistrate released Scher on his own recognizance following his arraignment.

He is next scheduled to appear in court on June 21.
