Lynn Man Charged With Striking Trooper While Drunk Held On 10K Bail

REVERE (CBS) -- A Lynn man was arraigned in his hospital bed Tuesday on charges he struck a Massachusetts State Trooper while driving his motorcycle drunk near Revere Beach Saturday.

Danilo DiRoche, 26, was arraigned Tuesday at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center on charges that included operating under the influence, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, resisting arrest, and reckless operation. He was ordered held on $10,000 bail.

DiRoche was arrested Saturday around 5:30 p.m. after police said he struck the trooper while driving his motorcycle around 60 MPH in a 30 MPH zone on Revere Beach Boulevard. The Suffolk County District Attorney's Office said he ignored and maneuvered past troopers who told him to slow down, and hit another trooper about a mile-and-a-half down the road.

Police said DiRoche hit a parked car, ran away, and was captured while running through a field between Revere Beach Boulevard and Ocean Avenue.

DiRoche's arraignment did not take place Monday as scheduled, because he was still hospitalized due to injuries he sustained in the crash.

According to court documents, DiRoche had a strong odor of alcohol, bloodshot eyes, and slurred speech at the time of his arrest, and told officers that he ran from them because he "was scared and did not want to get arrested."

"Man I (f—–) up. I should have just stayed home," DiRoche told police, according to court documents.

Police also say DiRoche told them he had four beers several hours before the crash and "knew he shouldn't have been driving that fast but was 'cruising to blow off steam.'" They also said his motorcycle was not registered.

The trooper who was hit was released from the hospital on Sunday.

Diroche was also charged with failure to stop, speeding, leaving the scene of an accident causing personal injury, marked lanes violation, number plate violation, operating an unregistered vehicle, passing violation, and a learner's permit violation.

He has been ordered to stay drug- and alcohol-free, submit to random drug tests, and refrain from driving unless he becomes properly licensed.

DiRoche is due back in court July 7.
