Phantom Gourmet: Cookie Dough Taste Test
BOSTON (CBS) -- Phantom recently purchased four packages of chocolate chip cookie dough from a local supermarket. The sweet contenders were Immaculate, Nestle Toll House, Pillsbury, and 600 Lb. Gorillas. All brands scored well in Phantom's taste test, because hey--they're cookies. Yet only one could end up at the top of the food chain.
First up is Pillsbury. This brand bakes up thin and crispy, but there are so few visible chocolate chips, phantom thought the doughboy may have forgotten to add them to the recipe. When it comes to taste, if you're looking for a buttery cookie, this one's for you. But if you like a decent amount of chocolate in your chocolate chip cookie, you'll probably be disappointed.
Next up is Immaculate Chocolate Chunk. The folk art on the package gives these cookies a wholesome air about them, and the easy-to-recognize ingredient list almost makes phantom feel like he's eating something healthy. Overall, these are decent cookies, with an ample amount of chocolate, but their flavor is a bit muddy, making them a bit unmemorable.
The runner up is 600 Lb. Gorillas. This local brand with the strange name is found in the frozen food aisle. There are only eighteen cookies per pack, as opposed to the standard twenty four, but they do bake up bigger than the other brands. Made with real butter and brown sugar, these cookies tasted most like home-made. Unfortunately, the big chocolate chunks are unevenly distributed due to substandard packaging that causes many of them to fall out of the frozen dough and settle at the bottom of the bag.
At the top of the food chain is Nestle Toll House. These good-looking cookies bake up with a lumpy, bumpy texture and nice golden color. They're crunchy on the outside with a soft chewy inside that's loaded with chocolate. Best of all, this recipe doesn't skimp on the salt, leading to a well-balanced snacking experience. That's why Nestle Toll House chocolate chip cookie dough is at the top of the food chain.
