Winthrop Elementary Student Finds Needle On Boston School Bus

BOSTON (CBS/AP) — Boston Public School officials say they're investigating after an elementary school student found a hypodermic needle on a school bus.

Officials say the girl was on her way to Winthrop Elementary School in Dorchester on Thursday morning when she found the needle in a bus compartment and told the driver.

The driver then pulled over and called emergency responders. The girl was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

School Superintendent Dr. Tommy Chang says the student does not appear to have suffered a needle prick.

Chang says drivers will conduct daily sweeps of the buses. Additional checks will be performed on half size buses, the type of bus on which the incident happened.

Last November, a six-year-old kindergarten student at the Ellis Elementary School in Roxbury suffered two needle pricks while picking up leaves with classmates in the schoolyard.
