Dombrowski: Red Sox Knew About Pablo Sandoval's Shoulder Problems Before Signing Him

BOSTON (CBS) -- Speaking to reporters before the Boston Red Sox took on the Chicago White Sox, team president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski addressed the Pablo Sandoval situation and expounded on his left shoulder surgery, which was to repair a torn labrum.

Dombrowski said that Sandoval had "labral effects" in his shoulder that the Red Sox saw and knew about when they signed him to a five-year, $95 million contract. Minor labrum damage is common among baseball players, but more so with pitchers. The team does not know how or when Sandoval's minor shoulder damage turned serious.

"I don't really know what happened," said Dombrowski. "One day [Sandoval] wakes up and he couldn't lift his shoulder, but that was really the first indication at that point that he was hurt."

Dombrowski added that weight loss is also part of Sandoval's recovery plan and the Red Sox third baseman has already shed some pounds. After seeing the birth of his second child in about two weeks, Sandoval will begin the rehab process somewhere in southern Florida.
