Brookline Outdoor Art Displays Vandalized
BROOKLINE (CBS) -- The art display near the Longwood MBTA station goes up every year, and organizers say it's supposed to welcome spring. Not this year.
Two displays at the Riverway Park were destroyed overnight on Sunday, including one display of a reflective box surrounding a tree. That piece was built by artist Kerri Schmidt and her husband David Foley.
"The kind of engagement that we're looking for is not this aggressive, destructive kind of engagement," Schmidt told WBZ Newsradio 1030. "We're looking to playfully and whimsically engage the audience."
Wendy Wolf, who helps coordinate the outdoor spring event, says this is not the first time artwork has been destroyed. It typically happens after a Red Sox game, she said.
"Art in the open is really valuable because a lot of people don't go to museums and galleries to see art, we're bringing it to them," Wolf said.
Schmidt's work may be able to be repaired, but the other destroyed work cannot. The irreparable work will be left at the art installation with signs explaining what happened.
