BILLERICA (CBS) — Heidi Madigan couldn’t believe her eyes when she saw an SUV that had crashed into a day care across the street from her home in Billerica.

She says her husband jumped into action following the Thursday afternoon crash on Boston Road.

“He rushed right over, he went inside and heard a scream,” Madigan told WBZ, “And noticed there was a kid underneath the car.”

Four young children were inside the house at the time of the crash. Police say the out-of-control Subaru Outback ran over one of the toddlers, trapping him.

Madigan says her husband freed the little boy.

“It was just chaos. It just happened so fast like a flash,” she says, adding that the boy was bleeding, scared and cried until paramedics arrived.

As of late Friday morning, the child and the driver were still at the hospital, police said. Investigators said the child appears to be OK and may be released sometime Friday, but the extent of the driver’s injuries and current condition are unknown.

Investigators say the driver, a 38-year-old Billerica woman, suffered a medical problem behind the wheel.

Surveillance video captured by a neighboring business shows the SUV traveling down Boston Road before nearly hitting Michael Chen, who was in a black pickup truck.

“The (SUV) was out of control,” he told WBZ. “She was passed out at the wheel. I was shocked (and) I couldn’t believe what was going on. I got scared.”

Police say the SUV hit two parked cars, a fence before barreling into the day care.

By the time neighbor Jim Galvin rushed over to help, the driver’s airbag had deployed and she managed to get out.

“She was conscious, but she was dazed,” he told WBZ. “It was all smoke in there, dust…It was like a bomb went off.”
