Wyc Grousbeck On Celtics' Playoff Chances, Offseason Potential
BOSTON (CBS) -- The Celtics have two games remaining in the regular season, but are also gearing up for their second straight trip to the NBA Playoffs.
Boston still has plenty to play for, trying to secure one of the top seeds in the Eastern Conference and home court advantage for at least one round, as they host a pair of potential playoff opponents in the Charlotte Bobcats (Monday night) and Miami Heat (Wednesday night) at TD Garden. Then it's on to the postseason, where they'll look to advance after getting swept in the first round last year.
All of this has team owner Wyc Grousbeck excited for what the next few months will bring for the Boston Celtics, as he hopes the team will take the next step under head coach Brad Stevens and make a lengthy postseason run.
"I love watching them as a team. Every night, someone else steps up," he told WBZ-TV's Steve Burton on Sunday night's edition of Sports Final. "We think we can compete with anybody, but we need to take the next step if we want to do damage in the playoffs. We'll have to lock in, and make some shots."
And while fans and the media are enjoying all the speculation regarding the upcoming offseason, with dreams of a top 3 draft pick or potentially luring a marquee free agent like Kevin Durant to town, Grousbeck is focused on the playoffs.
"I want to live in this moment. They're ahead of some people's schedules – not their own," he said of the current C's. "However it goes after that run, it goes. We have three first round picks, which is pretty phenomenal. We have room for two max [contract] players, and some really good guys under contract. Brad is coming back, so I'm really optimistic."
But even Grousbeck admits that the team will have a pretty good pitch to anyone who wants to come to Boston in the summer.
"There are some marquee players out there and rumors flying, but it doesn't mean anything until you get to the end of June and you can talk to the players and their family. What we'll tell them is this is a place where it's really special to become a champion. You're never forgotten," he said. "If you want to be part of something bigger than yourself, you'll want to be here."
