Jones: Clay Buchholz's Postgame Comments Just As Bad As Performance On The Mound

BOSTON (CBS) -- It's only two games into the 2016 season, yet the enigma that goes by the name of Clay Buchholz already appears to be in midseason form.

After David Price did David Price things in the opener, Clay Buchholz's annual Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde act started off on the wrong foot.

Buchholz put the team in an early hole after allowing four runs in the first inning, highlighted by Carlos Santana's mammoth three-run homer. To say the least, Wednesday night wasn't exactly the most inspired outing of Buchholz's career.

If his four-plus inning, six-hit, five-run performance wasn't alarming enough, prepare yourself for Buchholz's even less-inspired postgame comments.

While Buchholz said he felt pretty good, he also noted, "It was a little awkward with the game-time delay" ... which lasted 12 minutes.

"If not for that three-run homer right there, then I would've worked probably into the sixth," Buchholz said in an attempt to explain his performance. "Yeah, gotta keep the walks down, gotta work on a couple of pitches and with command of the fastball I guess."

Adam Jones and Rich Keefe didn't like what they heard from Buchholz.

"You know what just dawned on me? Buchholz in his best-case scenario still only pitches into the sixth," noted Jones. "When he hatched the perfect plan for the way today could've gone, it wasn't a complete game. It wasn't eight innings and [Craig] Kimbrel had to come in for him after that. No, he's like, 'Yeah, I could've been out there in the sixth.'"

That's not the mind-set of a No. 2 starter, which is concerning given the questions facing the Red Sox rotation past Price.

It was only one bad outing, but Buchholz's comments are bound to rub some people, including Jones and Keefe, the wrong way.
