BOSTON (CBS) — A sheriff’s deputy who died after his cruiser was struck by a wrong-way driver in Florida Saturday morning has ties to Massachusetts.
John Kotfila Jr., 30, of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Department was killed in the head-on crash on Selmon Expressway in Tampa, according to a statement released Saturday night by Massachusetts State Police. Before the crash, he had been at Tampa General Hospital investigating a crash.
Police say Kotfila was a six-year veteran with the sheriff’s department.
Kotfila comes from a family of policemen, as his father John Kotfila Sr. works as a sergeant for Massachusetts State Police and previously as an officer for Falmouth Police.
His brother Michael Kotfila serves as a police officer in Falmouth.
Funeral arrangements haven’t been finalized, police said.
