Cat Has Emergency Surgery After Swallowing 'Mountain' Of Hair Ties

BOSTON (CBS) -- A cat had to undergo emergency surgery after it swallowed a "mountain" of hair ties, MSPCA officials say.

Kitty, a seven-year-old Siamese cat, was rushed to the MSPCA-Angell in Jamaica Plain Sunday after he ate at least 14 hair ties, according to a news statement released Friday.

The two-hour surgery involved removing the hair ties and nearly two inches of the cat's intestines, which were "rendered unsalvageable by the twisting and turning of the ties," officials say.

An MSPCA doctor says the cat could have died if the surgery hadn't happened immediately.

Officials say the "sweet-natured" and "friendly" cat, which was surrendered by his owner, is recovering and will be put up for adoption on Monday.

Anyone interested in adopting Kitty can email adoption@mspca.org, or visit the MSPCA-Angell on South Huntington Avenue in Boston during adoption hours.
