Keller @ Large: Man's Best Friend

BOSTON (CBS) -- If you missed it, CJ the German Shorthaired Pointer was named best in show last night in New York at the Westminster Kennel Club shindig, and what a dog he is. In fact, all of the competitors for best in show were magnificent specimens.

Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever met a dog I didn't like.

Regulars here know that in my off hours, I am nothing more than a manservant and play toy for Buddy the Yellow Lab, a fantastic creature who always makes life fun and is significantly smarter and more impressive than some of the people running for president.

It will come as no surprise to Labrador Retriever lovers that labs reign supreme as the most popular breed in America, with Golden Retrievers and German Shepherds close behind. I personally like a big dog, but have had great experiences meeting smaller breeds who make the top ten, including Westies, Yorkies and Beagles.

I'll be honest – I love my friends, family and co-workers, and like people in general, but I often find myself preferring the company of dogs.

They ask for little, and give back much more than they demand.

I have never met a dog who didn't laugh at my jokes, and I'm sure I'm not imagining that.

It is no surprise that research shows petting a dog can quickly lower your blood pressure.

And if there's anything more calming than the sight of a dog sleeping like, well, a dog, I'd like to hear about it.

I'm sure devotees of other pets feel the same way, and more power to them. For me, dogs are one of God's greatest gifts.

And if you're reading this, CJ, feel free to come over this weekend to play.

Buddy has an extra ball she will gladly share.
