Denna Laing Joins Boston Pride Teammates On The Ice

BOSTON (CBS) - For 24-year-old Denna Laing, the hockey rink is her home and her Boston Pride "pack" is her family.

Denna is a member of the National Women's Hockey League and on Sunday, she took the ice with her Boston Pride teammates not with her skates, but in a wheelchair.

"I'm doing well," Laing said. "I'm working hard fighting every day."

On December 31st Denna suffered a severe spinal cord injury during the Outdoor Women's Classic at Gillette Stadium.

"I remember being sad and I was worried right when it happened that I messed it up and they wouldn't be able to play the whole game," Laing said.

Always selfless and positive Laing is more worried about her teammates than herself. She spends her days now at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital.

"How proud I am to see her come as far as she's come in such little time. She keeps us all going," her dad, Dennis Laing said.

Denna says she taking it one day at a time. "Never give up stay positive," Laing said. "I get down sometimes and I just think it could be worse it could be worse."

Sunday's game was also a fundraiser to raise money for the family. "This is Denna Day and we are very proud of her that she got to go on the ice with her teammates," Denna's mother Jerilyn Laing said.

Her teammates constantly rally around her. "She is working so hard and staying so positive so it's hard not to be positive around her," teammate Kelly Cooke said.

Denna says she is so thankful for all the support she's received and hopes one day to walk again.

"I just want to thank everyone for the support it means so much," Laing said.
