Report: Patriots Release Montee Ball

BOSTON (CBS) -- When Montee Ball signed with the Patriots, many fans had great expectations for the running back's tenure in New England.

As it turned out, that career was basically nonexistent.

Pro Football Talk reported Tuesday that the Patriots released Ball.

NESN's Doug Kyed added that technically Ball's contract expired on Feb. 1 and a re-signing never showed up on the league's transaction wire. In any case, the running back's time in New England is officially over.

Ball was arrested last weekend for an incident of alleged battery and disorderly conduct in Wisconsin. According to Fox 6 in Wisconsin, "A woman told police she and Ball were arguing when he threw her in the air. She said she landed on a table and cut her leg, requiring stitches."

The Patriots signed Ball on Dec. 15, placing him on the practice squad. He did not play in any games for the Patriots, who acquired Steven Jackson later in December.
