Belmont Woman Finishes 7 Marathons In 7 Days On 7 Continents

BOSTON (CBS) – A Massachusetts woman completed a grueling trip around the world as she ran her seventh marathon in seven days on seven continents.

Belmont resident Becca Pizzi ran a 26.2-mile marathon in Australia in a time of 4 hours 8 minutes and 51 seconds, winning the women's division of the World Marathon Challenge. The Sydney event began at 11 p.m. local time Friday night and ended in the early Saturday morning hours.

The 15 participants in the week-long event began in Antarctica on January 23 and in the ensuing days ran marathons in Chili, Miami, Spain, Morocco, Dubai and Australia to end the trek.

Pizzi faced adversity in her sixth race. In a Facebook post, the Belmont runner said that during the Asian marathon she pulled her groin in the second mile and was forced to slow her pace in order to finish.

Despite the injury, Pizzi posted Thursday just how excited she was to cap off the World Marathon Challenge by finishing in Australia.

The World Marathon Challenge costs participants nearly $40,000, though Pizzi has offset some of the cost by working with corporate sponsors.

By completing the seven marathons, Pizzi became the first American woman to ever accomplish the feat.
