Veteran Sleeps Outside State House To Raise Awareness Of Plight Of Homeless
BOSTON (CBS) -- Retired Army Specialist Stephen Bohn and his dog Minnie have spent the last 24 hours wrapped in blankets and outside the State House Thursday in an effort to raise awareness about the plight of homeless veterans.
Bohn told WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Karen Twomey he was glad the sun was out to warm him and Minnie after a tough night of sleeping out on the cold ground.
"It was rough," Bohn said. "I'm not going to lie, I'm not going to play some macho, 'I was military,' it was rough."
Bohn, of Salem, is not homeless, but he is a veteran. He served in Afghanistan and was severely injured by a suicide bomber.
Walking around the city, Bohn says he was touched by his fellow veterans sleeping on park benches.
"I decided, hey, why not go and support them, see if we can make a buzz around here to change that and get these men and women off the streets," Bohn said.
Bohn knows this is not a grand gesture, just a small show of solidarity.
